Ridding Your Property Of Gophers

If you have been dealing with a gopher problem in your yard, you have likely had destruction occur to vegetation and soil due to their natural burrowing tendencies. When gophers burrow and destroy property, it is time to take action to remove them. Here are steps you can take to get gophers to leave your property.

Use Scare Tactics To Get Gophers To Vacate On Their Own

Gophers will leave an area where they feel threatened. Using motion-powered lighting and a sprinkler system can be beneficial in catching gophers off-guard as they stroll through parts of your property you would rather they leave alone. In addition, using sound can scare gophers away. Set up speakers hooked up to a stereo system and turn the unit on during the daytime hours to keep gophers from congregating near plants or soil you want to keep intact. You may soon notice gophers are no longer an issue as they move on to other locations to nest and search for food.

Make It Difficult For Gophers To Want To Stay

If gophers have been feasting upon vegetables or flowers in your garden, consider spraying them with a mixture of crushed cayenne pepper and water. Gophers will shy away from continuing to eat plants that they do not find tasty. Gophers do not like items made of colored glass and will stay away from them. Placing colored glass lawn ornaments near any holes you have noticed on your property may be enough to get gophers to move on to another area to dig new tunnels for their homes.

Use Traps And Have Gophers Relocated

Small animal traps work well for capturing gophers. These can be purchased from a sporting store in the hunting gear department. Place the traps near any holes where you have seen gophers using as entryways and exits to the underground. Be careful not to touch the trap without gloves on your hands, as human skin will leave behind oils that can be smelled by gophers, leading them to stay away from the trap completely as a result. Check the traps daily and relocate any gophers you capture in an area away from your property. If you do not feel comfortable with this process, a wildlife removal service will conduct the process for you. They have traps available and will monitor gopher activity so relocation is done quickly.
