How Do You Control The Rat Population On Your Property

Rats can be a menace, especially if left to run around and thrive on your property. Their population will multiply, and you'll struggle to control them. For example, killing them won't necessarily offer a long-term solution.

Keep in mind that rats multiply rapidly; thus, killing one or two is only a short-term solution. You need to implement more effective rodent control measures such as the following.

Limit Access to Food

Rats need food to survive, that's why large cities like New York have a rodent control problem. The rats have easy access to food, water, and shelter. If you can limit access to food, you'll be one step closer to dealing with your rat problem.

Start by rat-proofing your home to make it harder for rats to enter. Also, change how you dispose of food and other kinds of waste. Make sure that rats can't access even the leftovers or waste food you throw in your garbage. Also, if you have bird feeders, change the feeder designs that are only suitable for birds. Without food and water, the rat population will slowly die off or move to a different location to access their basic needs.

Use Baits and Poisons

When dealing with rats outside your home, consider using baits and poisons. Be careful when handling baits and poisons, especially if you have kids. Rats can spread poison around the property or into your home. It can be hazardous if a small child comes into contact with the poison.

If you decide to use baits, ensure that you place the baits in enclosed locations. Place the baits in areas that are frequented by rats or their preferred paths. This will ensure the baits catch only rats, mice, and other rodents. Keep the baits and poison away from areas that kids and pets can access. Alternatively, you can consult a professional exterminator instead of trying to juggle so much.

Hire a Professional Pest Exterminator

This is the easiest and arguably the most effective rodent control measure. Before you can address the problem, you need to understand the size of the rodent population and the extent of the damage.

Hiring an exterminator means you get additional services such as inspection. The exterminator will inspect your property to determine the type of rat, colony size, and the best rodent control measure. They'll also identify the rats' entry points, nesting, and feeding areas. Once the exterminators have enough information, they can get rid of the rats and implement measures to prevent future infestations.
