Things To Take With You While Your Home Is Being Fumigated

If you're planning on having traditional termite tenting or whole house pest control service, then you may be wondering what you need to remove from your home and what can stay during the fumigation. During the time that your home is being fumigated, poisonous gas will be going through the house and could affect or contaminate certain things. It's important you take or move certain items when you leave for your alternative temporary living space. Here are some critical items you should take after you've prepared everything else for the fumigation.

Your pets:

While it may seem obvious that you should take your pets if you're going to have your whole house fumigated, it can be easy to forget the smaller caged pets and fish. Be sure to take all your pets cages and accessories with you when you leave. If you have fish, you might want to consider bringing along an aeration system along with a temporary tank and water treatments. If you can't take your pet fish, then talk to the pest control company for alternative solutions.

Food:

Any food that is already open should be removed or discarded. Most food in the refrigerator will probably stay safe, but it's always good to be careful and remove anything that is not sealed. Though you may be given special bags to store opened food, taking the food with you is a much better option. Be sure to also bring your pet's food as well. Don't stock up before the fumigation event.

Plants:

Remove all houseplants and any plants that are outside which are close to your home. Your best bet is to take them with you as well. If you can't, then make sure that you move them as far from your home as possible. Also, trimming your hedges and trees is also helpful, especially if you're having the house tented.

Valuables:

Sometimes, having a tent or a fumigation warning sign on your home is a signal to thieves that your home is ripe for the picking. These thieves don't care enough about their health and will risk being poisoned to get your jewelry or electronics. At the minimum, hide or lock away any valuable items. If something is particularly precious to you, then take it with you.

You will need to stay out of your home until the pest control company gives you the go-ahead to return. There's no need to worry about residue setting on dishes or furniture and the gas dissipates fairly quickly. If you are concerned, anyway, feel free to wipe off tops of cans or rinse your dishes before use. If tenting your home seems like too much for you, there may be other alternatives to cure your termite problem.
